No present anniversary

Today is our wedding anniversary and we share it with Gordon Brown's anniversary of becoming prime minister. After yesterday's by-election in Henley-on-Thames I imagine that he is having a black and blue day. I shall be glad when he shuffles off the stage and we no longer have to share our anniversary with him. We are not the only couple celebrating our wedding anniversary today. There were several dedications on the Ken Bruce Show on Radio Two this morning. Some had been married longer than us, others not as long. We have been married for seventeen years. I looked it up to see where we stood in the paper, silver and gold stakes. There is no traditional present for seventeen years. In this house that phrase is better re-arranged to the tradition is no present. Last weekend my husband talked about going out for a meal for our anniversary but has not bothered to book anything. So rather than go hungry I have planned to cook the meal myself.

He sounds as if he needs a little encouragement! Still sometimes I think just being together with someone is enough without all the fuss of an anniversary - are you going to let him off the hook easily?

Very little needs to be said about Gordon Brown - the sooner gone the better on all fronts!!

My Wee Murdo (aged 4) watches the Daily Politics programme with me at lunchtime. The other day he asked me "Why is Gordon brown?". I think you are right about him being a bit blue...

I am not going to pick a fight with my husband - he is bigger than me.

You are right Mima, it is just nice to have him home, as he is away a lot.

Oh poo, but if it's any consolation my husband isn't great on the anniversary front either. I'm not either, so I reckon we're quits. We'll have our 15th anniversary this year so maybe for the 20th we'll finally make an effort!!

I am seriously considering recording the diabolical sound of snoring Hamish and making HIM try to sleep with the interminable, infernal noise, in retaliation for severe anniversary amnesia. I'll let him off for now, as he remembered my birthday...

It is our 17 year anniversary this year too - Not until September though - I hope you had better weather than us, after a run of sunny weekends the heavens opened and the video consists of a background of howling wind and torrential rain.

The weather was grey and cool the day that we got married. I had threatened that my something blue would be an old blue anorak. Summer started two days later as we left for our honeymoon.

I looked up anniversaries in my little book CW and you are right - nothing for 17 years. And I hate to be a killjoy but nothing for 18 or 19 either - sorry. We will be celebrating 20 years in September and it seems that is China - don't think we'll be going there though!

Have just discovered you and am enjoying reading through your previous!
